Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find out if chiropractic can help me?
At Clinig Corff Ystwyth, we offer a free screening to all patients who are unsure as to whether or not chiropractic is the right choice for them. At this screening we can have a short discussion about your problem and a brief examination of your condition can allow us to best advise you on how to proceed.
Will the treatment hurt?
Chiropractic manipulation (known as an adjustment) is quick and precise and may cause short-lived discomfort that passes within seconds. An extremely common response to any type of physical therapy is that you may notice an aggravation of your symptoms in the early stages of care. Best results are achieved if you are able to relax totally during an adjustment. This becomes easier when you become more familiar with chiropractic treatment.
How many treatments do I need?
This depends on how long you have had a problem, how severe it is and also how much advice you follow. A normal course of treatment usually consists of around six treatments in the first month, becoming less frequent as you respond well.
Do I need an X-ray of my problem?
Probably not. Most cases of back pain are caused by ‘mechanical’ factors. This means that they are due to a lack of proper movement in your joints, muscles and ligaments – none of which show up on an X-ray, blood test or scan. A BCA chiropractor is trained to detect this abnormal movement and also to recognise those cases where pain is not from a mechanical source and does indeed need X-rays, blood tests and scans. BCA chiropractors’ qualification includes Radiology and Radiography, meaning we are very well trained to recognise when and why you may need and X-ray. Like all health professionals, chiropractors have to comply with the legislation that governs the use of X-rays - the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000
Is chiropractic safe?
Yes. There is a large body of evidence that can prove how effective, efficient and safe chiropractic care is.

Can I bring someone with me to an appointment?

Do I have to undress?
Yes, but only as far as you are comfortable and you will always keep your underwear on. All females are provided with a gown to wear at all times and you are allowed to undress and get changed in a totally private room.
Do I have to keep coming back even if my problem disappears?
After a course of successful treatment, it is important to have regular check-ups at intervals that are right for you. Regular treatment can prevent future problems and can help improve the function of your nervous system. Check-ups can be as infrequent as 6 monthly.
Can I help myself?
One of the most important parts of chiropractic care is helping you understand how to look after your own back, and the backs of friends and family for that matter. You will be given advice on such things as posture, stretching, exercise, lifestyle, stress relief and nutrition in an attempt to relieve your problems for ever.
Do I need chiropractic or should I see an osteopath/physiotherapist/massage therapist?
Chiropractic is able to offer a scientific, evidence based approach to your condition and will utilize well used and proven techniques that have helped millions of people just like you enjoy rapid pain relief and better health. This is not to detract one bit from osteopaths and physiotherapists, it’s just that chiropractic can offer such a comprehensive package of care that it should provide all you need when it comes to looking after your spinal health.
